VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is a consumption tax added to goods and services in many countries. Businesses often need to calculate VAT to set prices correctly, issue invoices, and understand how much tax is included in a sale.
There are two common VAT calculations:
Add VAT: Price After VAT = Price Before VAT × (1 + VAT Rate)
Remove VAT: Price Before VAT = Price After VAT ÷ (1 + VAT Rate)
Once you know the price before VAT and after VAT, the VAT amount is simply the difference between those two values.
If a product costs £100 before VAT and the VAT rate is 20%, the final price after VAT is £120. The VAT amount is £20. If you already have a total of £120 including VAT, removing 20% VAT gives a pre-VAT price of £100.
VAT affects selling prices, invoices, profit reporting, and customer transparency. Small businesses, eCommerce sellers, freelancers, and retailers often need to add VAT to prices or remove VAT from totals to understand the true underlying amount.
This calculator lets you enter multiple products with different VAT rates and calculation modes. It automatically works out the VAT amount, the pre-VAT price, and the final price after VAT for each row. You can also export the full table to CSV.
